Minnie Wegner Staack

Wilhelmina Maria Friedericke Wegner or “Minnie” was born on October 19, 1867 in Salchow, Kreis Anklam, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany and baptized November 3 at the evangelical church in Ziethen [1900 Census, ED #1138 (June 8, 1900), 7; Ortsfamilienbuch Ziethen (bei Anklam) by Christian Boose, on genealogy.net website; #1309310, Illinois Department of Public Health. “Birth and Death Records, 1916–present.” Division of Vital Records, Springfield, Illinois via Ancestry.com; “Wilhelmina Staack,” on Find-a-Grave website].  They seem to have moved between farms within Kreis Anklam–one sibling’s birthplace was given as Salchow in 1869, and another as Pamitz in 1874 [Barrington Review (IL), July 31, 1897 and June 8, 1901; Ortsfamilienbuch Ziethen (bei Anklam) by Christian Boose, on genealogy.net website].

She immigrated from Germany in 1881 and was naturalized in 1892 [1910 census, ED #582 (April 18, 1910), 3A; 1920 census, ED #662 (January 8, 1920), 7A].  Wilhelmine traveled with farmer Johann and Henriette Wegner and siblings, arriving in New York on the Silesia from Buggow, Germany, having left from Hamburg on November 9, 1881, going through the port at Le Havre and arriving in New York on November 25th [Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897. Microfilm Publication M237, 675 rolls. NAI: 6256867. Records of the U.S. Customs Service, Record Group 36. National Archives at Washington, D.C. via Ancestry.com; Hamburg Passenger Lists, Staatsarchiv Hamburg; Hamburg, Deutschland; Hamburger Passagierlisten; Microfilm No.: K_1726 via Ancestry.com].

She married Rudolph Staack on May 6, 1886 [1900 Census; Marriage record, Cook County, #102138].  They were married by E. Rahn, “pastor of the German St. Paul’s Church, Barrington” [Marriage record].

In 1900, Rudolph and Minnie owned a house on Grove Avenue in Barrington, Lake County, Illinois, in the Chicago metro area, with their children and Minnie’s parents [1900 Census; Bumstead’s Waukegan City and Lake County Directory 1901-1902 (Chicago: Whitney Publishing Co., 1901), 643].  They had lost two of five children by 1900 [1900 census].

In 1910, they rented a house at 2115 Hasting Street, Chicago with Minnie’s parents and a 15-year-old boarder named Laura Karschnik (a niece? Or related to her sister Rika?) [1910 census; Appears to be a vacant lot on Google Maps].  In 1920, their address was given as 2117 Hastings, a house they owned and rented part to a family named Larman, and their young grandson Harold Pressler lived with them [1920 census].

Minnie died on March 5, 1922 of liver cancer in Chicago [#1309310, Illinois Department of Public Health. “Birth and Death Records, 1916–present.” Division of Vital Records, Springfield, Illinois via Ancestry.com].  She was buried on May 8th at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Barrington [“Wilhelmina Staack,” on Find-a-Grave website].
